If you are living and working in Croatia, there is an important new rule you should know about - but there is no need to stress. The Croatian Parliament has adopted amendments to the Foreigners Act. Under the new rules, foreign nationals will be required to pass a Croatian language and Latin script exam at the A1.1 level within one year in order to extend their residence and work permits.
The good news?
The required level is very beginner-friendly, and if you start learning early, it should be completely manageable for most people.
So, What’s Changing?
Under the new law, foreign workers in Croatia will need to show basic knowledge of:
· Croatian language
· Latin alphabet and writing
· Everyday communication skills
The required level is called A1.1, which is the most basic beginner level. You are not expected to speak perfect Croatian or have fluent conversations.
The goal is simply to help foreign workers communicate more easily in everyday life and at work.
You may need to:
· Introduce yourself
· Understand simple workplace instructions
· Ask basic questions
· Read signs or notices
· Communicate in shops, hospitals, or public offices
The exam requirement will apply when you renew or extend your work and residence permit after your first year in Croatia.
What Is the A1.1 Level?
The A1.1 level is considered beginner-level Croatian. Workers will not be expected to speak fluently.
The exam will likely focus on:
· Basic greetings
· Reading simple signs and notices
· Understanding numbers and dates
· Filling out simple forms
· Basic workplace vocabulary
· Short conversations
For many foreign workers, this level can usually be achieved through introductory language courses lasting several weeks or a few months.
Don’t Worry - A1.1 Is a Beginner Level
Many people hear “language exam” and immediately feel stressed. But A1.1 is really a very basic level.
You will likely learn things like:
· Greetings and simple conversations
· Numbers, dates, and time
· Basic Croatian words used at work
· Reading simple forms and signs
· Everyday phrases
For most workers, this level can be reached within a few months with regular practice.
The important thing is not to wait until the last minute.
